They must convince her family they're in love, an act which may (or may not) be easy to pull off, thanks to the magic of some mistletoe. Amazon link here https://www.amazon.com/More-Merrier-Wholesome-Romance-Seasons-ebook/dp/B016V85D3S/ ~ My Review ~Short and sweet. I don't know about you, but I've been in a reading funk lately. I'll pick up a book, get halfway through it and put it down. Last year, most of my books in my TBR were "DNR" (did not finish). This year, knowing what to expect and making sure we take care of our mental and emotional health by leaving our house and our bubble safely, I went back to my first love: romance novels. Now, I had promised to read a parenting book and review it, so I did that first....while looking through my kindle for the books that I didn't have the heart and mental capacity to read over last year. Liwen Y. Ho has written so many sweet and clean romance books and I knew I wouldn't be disappointed when I chose this book, "The More the Merrier," as my springboard, if you will, into a deeper dive of reading again. I wanted to be able to fall in love with books and I knew romance - with its' likeable and flawed characters, their 'meet cute' and 'happily ever after's would give me the comfort I so desired. This was such a short and quick read. We meet Alyssa and her "dilemma." Classic fake boyfriend/next door neighbors/friends turned lovers. I'm pretty sure I smiled through the entire exchange between Barry, the next door neighbor who cleans up nice, and Alyssa, our by-the-book, serious heroine who needed a little fun and merry in her life. Bonus: this reminded me of a Hallmark movie and one where Asians were the lead and knowing that certain professions (doctors, engineers, lawyers) are accepted in an Asian community and some are not. For a blogger and writer like Alyssa, I completely related to her, right down to the ice cream choices and stress eating sweets. SIDENOTE: Thank you to Liwen for getting me excited about writing my Filipino romcom and knowing how much (or how little) to share my roots and culture. And then as I struggle to describe my characters, I had to reread Alyssa and Barry. Liwen didn't do specific descriptions for them. She wrote Korean American and I pictured my Korean American friend. I knew the "looks" that Alyssa worried about getting from family and friends, having gone to so many Filipino or Asian parties where you have to introduce your person and hope to God that they pass the "they're good enough" test. I remember the struggle and having to justify my own career choices. This was both refreshing to read but also made me realize that there aren't very many Asian romance books that I've come across or read. Or maybe I'm not trying hard enough to look. At any rate, I've got another book from Liwen that I can't wait to dive into! Rating: 5/5About the AuthorLiwen Y. Hunches, horse races, and heartbreak
Ten years after Simone Payton broke his heart, all Roscoe Winston wants is a doughnut. He’d also like to forget her entirely, but that’s never going to happen. Roscoe Winston remembers everything—every look, every word, every single unrequited second—and the last thing he needs is another memory of Simone. Unfortunately, after one chance encounter, Simone keeps popping up everywhere he happens to be . . . Ten years after Roscoe Winston dropped out of her life, all Simone Payton wants is to exploit him. She’d also like some answers from her former best friend about why he ghosted her, but if she never gets those answers, that’s a-okay. Simone let go of the past a long time ago. Seriously, she has. She totally, totally has. She is definitely not still thinking about Roscoe. Nope. She’s more than happy to forget he exists. But first, she needs just one teeny-tiny favor . . . Dr. Strange Beard is a full-length romantic comedy novel, can be read as a stand-alone, and is the fifth book in the USA TODAY bestselling Winston Brothers series. ~My Review~
This pains me to say but this may be my least favorite of all Penny Reid's books. I had no problem relating to Sienna Diaz, as her character was pure fun right from the beginning. With Reid writing as Simone Payton, it didn't sound quite right to me. Even in the story, when race factors in and Simone tells Ashley Winston to let the person of color voice their fear, their concerns, and to let them speak up instead of relying on this "white savior" narrative. Or perhaps that's just how I took it, as a person of color with the knowledge and experiences of what marginalized people have to go through on any given day. I love you, Penny, but I truly didn't need to have someone like you, a white woman, tell me a story, nay, a lecture on race issues. It sounded forced, and hollow and I didn't need to be a part of that narrative. I GET that, and even my own experiences as a "token Asian" in a mostly Caucasian small East Texas neighborhood pales in comparison to how I know my black friends are treated daily.
That being said, I tried to finish this book with an open heart, because I REALLY LOVE PENNY REID. In typical Reid style, hilarity, miscommunication and swoon worthy lines from Roscoe ensues. What kept me turning the pages were some of the action sequence and our lovely Winston brood. I just tried to block out some of Simone's internal monologue, and mostly listened and lamented with Roscoe. NOTES: there is a time jump so it was a little confusing in the beginning. Even if I didn't like this book, you still need to get this, as I believe there are a couple little "easter eggs" for Billy's upcoming story! I'm super excited for Billy and absolutely can't wait for his happy ever after! And I believe I shed a tear or two during a conversation with Billy and Roscoe.

There are three things you need to know about Kat Tanner (aka Kathleen Tyson. . . and yes, she is *that* Kathleen Tyson): 1) She’s determined to make good decisions, 2) She must get married ASAP, and 3) She knows how to knit. Being a billionaire heiress isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it sucks. Determined to live a quiet life, Kat Tanner changed her identity years ago and eschewed her family’s legacy. But now, Kat’s silver spoon past has finally caught up with her, and so have her youthful mistakes. To avoid imminent disaster, she must marry immediately; it is essential that the person she chooses have no romantic feelings for her whatsoever and be completely trustworthy. Fortunately, she knows exactly who to ask. Dan O’Malley checks all the boxes: single, romantically indifferent to her, completely trustworthy. Sure, she might have a wee little crush on Dan the Security Man, but with clear rules, expectations, and a legally binding contract, Kat is certain she can make it through this debacle with her sanity—and heart—all in one piece. Except, what happens when Dan O’Malley isn’t as indifferent—or as trustworthy—as she thought? ~My Review~Rating: 5/5In Penny Reid's Newsletter voice: PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE LONGEST REVIEW EVER I feel like I can't just do this review for Dan and Kat, but sum up how I feel about every character in this series. "Every ending does have a beginning," after all is written under the dedication. The whole Knitting in the City series to me, felt like this house party I got invited to and never left. I made a home here, in this giant mansion with these people. Each room is a story layed out and decorated just for them and every character can go in and out, mingle in these snippets or "Easter eggs" found throughout the series. I would find Quinn and Janie in the study of this house party that is hosted in their huge mansion; wall to wall of knowledge at your grasp, the decor a dichotomy of masculinity and femininity. Elizabeth and Nico would be in the living room, perhaps hovering just at the entrance, inviting you into their lives and easing your discomfort at being at a party where you know all know their names, and they know all of you. Marie and Ashley with their goodness, would glide in and out of each room, ensuring that you are served properly, are comfortable and having a ball; the steady lights in a room full of twinkling stars. I'd probably venture into the kitchen where Sandra and Fiona occupy a space. Hearth, laughter, warmth, mother hens in a room where the tears are shed, bellies are fed, and laughter abounds. Throughout the series, I had pictured Kat in a tower of her own construct, and where not even the bravest knights would coax her down. I pictured her in aloofness, waiting for her story and letting the world write it for her. Never in my imagination, would I find that Kat is the embodiment of a dragon, sitting in her tower, yes waiting for her story but also bidding her time. Controlling her narrative, as best as she can. A dragon with a multimillionaire dollar pen. I love the way Penny Reid writes each woman's prerogatives, missteps, hopes and friendships, and messy love lives. She doesn't mince words about their faults or beliefs, and sprinkles conversations that are needed in today's temperament. These women are real to me, because I find pieces of them in my friends as we struggle to have an open dialogue with each other, as we laugh over wine and books, as commiserate about what this world is coming to, and grateful that in our world, we've found each other and because pieces of them are me, in my anxiety, my mental preparations and quirks. In Marriage of Inconvenience, I saw a lot of my worries and worst case scenarios (that I'm working on by the way) in Kat. I applaud. I toast. I salute. I continue to be in awe of how Reid approaches mental illnesses. I thought she did an amazing job covering what living with mental illness is like in Shelly Sullivan and Beau's story in Beard in Mind (Winston Bros #4) but it was just as wonderful to be able to read that in this story. (We are not our illnesses is an epiphany that we need to believe). And there were parts here that came full circle for me. I HATE spoilers, so I'm not going to say but I appreciated this book. I will now reread this entire series and try to hang out at this rocking party a little longer. ***I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I am not required to write a positive one. Newlywed Katie Maxwell is ready to settle down and leave her amateur detective days behind. But when the veil of secrecy surrounding her husband’s latest project takes them to Europe, her penchant for sleuthing lands her in some serious hot foreign water.
Katie will need to think quickly to talk her way out of handcuffs and a Parisian jail cell. Too bad she doesn't speak French. For the Love of Katie is the second madcap adventure in The Katie Chronicles. This book can be read as a standalone, but why would you want to skip the first? ~ My Review ~
Something worth mentioning before I begin: I never read the first book, as I understood this can be read as a standalone. That being said though, and much like the blurb, why did I want to skip the first one, right? I got the feel for the characters and their relationships with each other from the beginning. There were parts that I'm sure I if I had read the first one, I would have been privy to the inside jokes.
However, my clueless self enjoyed the ride as I laughed along with this book!! There were tons of giggles and some cringe worthy moments to be had and I was rooting for Katie's happiness to make sure she doesn't get into any more trouble. The secondary characters were written well and kudus to Erica Lucke Dean for the character development. I felt like that coworker who always tagged along for these after hour drinks and knowing just a little enough about these coworkers for me to both adore and worry about. ***I received this book in exchange for an honest review. After walking away from her career as a business banker to pursue writing full-time, Erica moved from the hustle and bustle of the big city to a small tourist town in the North Georgia Mountains where she lives in a 90-year-old haunted farmhouse with her workaholic husband, her 180lb lap dog, and at least one ghost.
When she's not busy writing or tending to her collection of crazy chickens, diabolical ducks, and a quintet of piglets, hell bent on having her for dinner, she's either reading bad fan fiction or singing karaoke in the local pub. Cane Trevino is nursing a broken heart by joining the show as a medic. With time away from his regular job and a dozen contestants to distract him, he hopes he can finally get over the woman he thought was “the one.” ~My Review~This reminded me of an earlier book I had read but both women in the stories were considerably different. I related more to Megan than the other protagonist. We both have this social awkwardness and aloofness about us. I probably would have gone kicking and screaming into the room or just called timeout and exited the show, however. Anyway, this was such a cute and fast read. If you love any type of reality tv, this one is for you. It's always fun to lump strangers together and see what type of characters emerge in stressed out situations. Much like all reality shows, we have a villain, some backstabbers, one side versus the other. It never lulled in any parts for me and I wonder if it's because I don't enjoy this type of voyeurism on television but reading the thoughts and motivations certainly captured my attention.
