Rachel Montgomery’s family doesn’t think she can change—but she’s going to prove them wrong… What could be more out of character for overly-cautious Rachel than moving sight unseen to the small town of Birch Valley to become the principal of the town’s only elementary school? When she arrives late on her first day, she realizes no one was expecting her, leading to conflict with the staff—and particularly with one handsome, emerald-eyed fourth grade teacher. Liam O’Brien’s life is simple and easygoing, just the way he likes it—until he shows up for school following the holiday break… Not only is his new boss the rude woman who stole his parking spot, she’s highly motivated to switch things up in his very traditional school, and Liam is not a fan of change. His inexplicable attraction to the petite blonde complicates matters, as Rachel is adamant that she didn’t move all the way to Birch Valley to get involved in any kind of romance. But as conflicts are resolved, family ties might draw Liam and Rachel together… Rachel discovers Liam’s family is loving and supportive, particularly his mother Mary—unlike Rachel’s own mother. She bonds with his brothers and his sister Maggie, and it almost seems too good to be true. Can they work through their differences and compromise enough to build a lasting relationship? Or will Rachel be unable to let her guard down long enough to take a chance on… Loving Liam ~ My Review ~I've been wanting to read this book for awhile. And perhaps because it's been hotter than Hades outside, I particularly loved that I can escape to a dreamy winter wonderland. I've only read one other book of Gloria Herrnamm and I knew that this book would be just as descriptive and sound breathtaking. Much like her other book, it also showcases family dynamics. Rachel's family is cold, and almost calculating. Whereas, the O’Brien’s are loud, funny, supportive and very Irish. Rachel being the outsider doesn't take long to fit in with Liam's family. Or perhaps, because of her family issues, it's easy to see how she can fall just as hard for a wonderful family. This is a perfect rainy day read. It moved the two together in a typical romantic fashion but it's not overtly cheesy and the characters were developed enough that we root for the happy ever after....and not just for these two but for the entire family. Way to start a series, Gloria! I'm loving Liam and can't wait to see what happens next!!!! About the AuthorGloria Herrmann is a romance author living in beautiful eastern Washington. All is fair in love and auto maintenance. Beau Winston is the nicest, most accommodating guy in the world. Usually. Handsome as the devil and twice as charismatic, Beau lives a charmed life as everyone’s favorite Winston Brother. But since his twin decided to leave town, and his other brother hired a stunning human-porcupine hybrid as a replacement mechanic for their auto shop, Beau Winston’s charmed life has gone to hell in a handbasket. Shelly Sullivan is not nice and is never accommodating. Ever. She mumbles to herself, but won’t respond when asked a question. She glares at everyone, especially babies. She won’t shake hands with or touch another person, but has no problems cuddling with a dog. And her damn parrot speaks only in curse words. Beau wants her gone. He wants her out of his auto shop, out of Tennessee, and out of his life. The only problem is, learning why this porcupine wears her coat of spikes opens a Pandora’s box of complexity—exquisite, tempting, heartbreaking complexity—and Beau Winston soon discovers being nice and accommodating might mean losing what matters most. I like the shrewdness and the unapologetic mischief he gets his siblings in. But I must say that out of all the Penny Reid's Knitting in the City and the Winston Brothers series, I'm was very torn on this one. We saw glimpses of Shelly and Beau from the Cletus' Beard Science. Penny hinted that Shelly was quirky and was depicted as "odd" and "cold." I braced myself with this story. I was excited for Beau but wasn't sure if I would like Shelly. Unlike all the other books where I read fast and laughed and hollered and reread it again before the sun came up, I took my time with this book. I felt like it needed to be read slow, with grace and understanding. I appreciate this book. I appreciate the pace she took to take this complex character that is Shelly Sullivan, and dissect her in such a way that it that didn't feel invasive. I grew up with a sibling who has OCD and it's hard to take all that I know, all that I have seen and lived with, and then to read about a character with this disorder and just hope that it doesn't become too stereotypical and pitying. And she wasn't. In typical Penny style, Beard in Mind gives us strong and flawed characters who own their faults and carry their pasts like shields. It's also sprinkled with dry humor and wit that allows us to catch our breath from the gravity and lessons and truths that accompany a person with a mental disorder. Bravo, Penny. I think you did an amazing job depicting someone with the disorder.....I have generalized anxiety and I found myself stopping every so often during the sessions and repeating affirmations. I am not my compulsions. We are not our disorders. We are more than labels assigned to our neurosis. I loved that you had a strong, albeit wrecked character, actively seeking help. Sidenote: I love Dr. West. I am always a little grateful when I read about a character speaking with a therapist and deconstructing what therapy is like for people who need help. You also made sure to point out a few times that OCD looks different for everyone. Another sidenote: I love your notes from the author section. Thank you! Most of all, I love that the acknowledgement in the end that essentially says, yes, I am broken and that's okay. "Perfect is boring." ***I received this book in exchange for an honest review. For a chance to win, enter the rafflecopter below: Synopsis: Twenty-four-year-old Jen Reid had her life in good shape: an okay job, a tiny-cute Seattle apartment, and a great boyfriend almost ready to get serious. In a flash it all came apart. Single, unemployed, and holding an eviction notice, who has time to remember trying out for a reality show? Then the call comes, and Jen sees her chance to start over—by spending her summer on national TV. Luckily The Fishbowl is all about puzzles and games, the kind of thing Jen would love even if she wasn’t desperate. The cast checks all the boxes: cheerful, quirky Birdie speaks in hashtags; vicious Ariana knows just how to pout for the cameras; and corn-fed “J-dawg” plays the cartoon villain of the house. Then there’s Justin, the green-eyed law student who always seems a breath away from kissing her. Is their attraction real, or a trick to get him closer to the $250,000 grand prize? ? Romance or showmance, suddenly Jen has a lot more to lose than a summer . . . Some people have their go-to quick reads and my pile will always have a contemporary romantic comedy because that's my escape. Want to know what my other go-to escape, as of late? Reality television. This book took my love with movie/book "fluff," as my husband calls it, and my current must-see obsession and it's just as much a page turner as it is a "I-can't-watch-but-can't-look-away," type of thing. Jen is likeable, smart and seemingly normal 24 year old who unfortunately, through a series of one event to another, finds herself broke, single and homeless. I rooted for her to have a better summer and walk away with the grand prize. We have the "necessary" cast of characters - the villain, the drama queen, the family man, the gay guy and the quirky but loveable weirdo, etc. (I mean that nicely because if I were to even go on national television, that would be me, quirky, weird, lovable). But I enjoyed the fact that Laura took the time for us to get to know them, through the "confessional" zingers, challenges and their interactions with everyone. They were and weren't boxed in a cliche. Even if Jen was our main girl, we didn't feel at all like traitors if we rooted for (some of) the others! What a fun summer read, and as I found out there is definitely a sequel to this reality "show" I can't wait to reread this again in anticipation for the next one. This kept up with old adage of "expecting the unexpected," in America's Next Reality Star. *I received this book in exchange for an honest review. However, these thoughts and opinions are my own. But every clue she uncovers leads to another dead end… Libby must risk her life to discover the truth about her husband and his murder, but things become even more dangerous when she realizes someone is watching her every move. ~ My Review ~In the first few pages, Libby wakes up to find her husband dead and she has no recollection of this living nightmare. What a way to start a series, Christina! This was told from Libby's point of view so we automatically get sucked into her world and this murder mystery that surrounds her. This was a page turner and moved along at a frantic pace, and even though it slowed down to let you catch your breath, I was still guessing who killed Ryan and what in the world Libby was going to do next. Well done and I can see why it's a suspense finalist for the 2017 Indie Excellence Award. It's not everyday you get to read about a family that has two people with blood on their hands. This book is for anyone who loves deeply, has bad days, and searches for happiness in the world around them. It is for those who have been hurt and have the scars to prove they're still alive. ~ My Review ~I read this while listening to the sound of a summer thunderstorm playing right outside my bedroom window. Shelby's words cocooned me and while they were beautiful, I felt the tears between the pages. I can imagine a soft spoken walking heartache waiting to scream but all that is left are words that are haunting on paper. I've been on a poetry kick lately and out of the ones that I have read, this one has been my favorite... not just in the delivery of the poems but the sadness that still echo within them. Well done, Shelby Leigh! About the AuthorShelby Leigh is a debut poet from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After completing a poetry challenge in which she wrote a poem every day for a year, her readers encouraged her to publish a book. Her first poetry book, It Starts Like This, is a collection of her favorites. Shelby is currently working towards a B.A. in communications and professional writing. Connect with her on Instagram, Twitter, and Goodreads @shelbysleigh and on Tumblr @nothingwithoutwords. Her official website is www.shelbyleigh.co. "Your Grace! With deep sadness have I learnt about the inconveniences that are being prepared for you. Evil doesn’t sleep… The denunciation had been sent to the Synod. I’m sending you the rough draft that accidentally fell into my hands, in order for you to have the possibility to prepare a worthy answer, just in case… A well-wisher." The venomous paper had been read several times by the Archbishop. His heart was in pain; but his face, however, remained calm. He remained deep in his thoughts, while the candle light was barely illuminating his small chamber in the parochial house. The clock struck midnight. He knew this was his last night here. In 20th century Russia, right before the start of the Bolshevik revolution, a new Archbishop is appointed in a small village, situated on the shores of the Volga river. His mission is simple; to bring back the apostolic spirit among the priests and believers of the place. But this was not an ordinary place with ordinary priests. The Evil never sleeps here. The priests have their own secrets and fears that the Archbishop has to discover, in order to earn their trust and fulfill his mission. As the Archbishop fights to revive Christ's spirit in the parish, more troubles begin to nurture within the clergy itself. They need help. But when the heavens won't answer their prayers, what could a bishop do? The Archbishop by Hieromonk Tihon is a famous book in Russia. Written before the Bolshevik revolution, it landed along with other extraordinary books of Orthodoxy under the steamroller of the communist censorship. Now in its third edition in English, The Archbishop enjoy es a favorable welcoming not only among the faithful laity but also the clergy. ~ My Review ~The Archbishop is beautifully written and I appreciate the eloquence of the author, Hieromonk Tihon, in talking about the Christian faith and religion, in general. In today's world, where it seems Christ is once again being crucified and His people have turned their backs on Him, it is still a testament of faith to continue to follow in His footsteps. Faith has been "funny" lately and have been twisted in multiple ways to mold in today's modern and evolving society. We see more of the faithful leaving their "posts" daily and then, as the faithful, we start to believe that perhaps this Son was just a mere man whom the Apostles projected miracles to and told 'fairy tales' to the weak and disillusioned passersby some 2,000 years ago! We are still weak and growing more disillusioned just like the peasants and townspeople in this story but there among them (and us) is a Shepherd. This book was full of wisdom and strength in faith but I will warn the reader that it moves a little slow. Also as a Roman Catholic, I understood how some words and contents may be taken as blasphemy, but it is a work of fiction that offers a rare inside view of priesthood; their thoughts and way of life. NOTE: I am giving this a 3 star rating. As much as I appreciate the theology and the message, I found the pacing to be slow. The stories within the story was interesting and captured the different clergy's thoughts and way of life for those living in the asylum....but I was confused on what the plot was. I get that the Archbishop is introduced to this new land but there were too many people introduced and I lost count on where and what the main priest told in the beginning was supposed to be. *I received this book in exchange for an honest review. However, these thoughts and opinions are my own. I'm not required to write a positive review.*** About the AuthorTo follow Savatie Bastovoi on Amazon, click here.
