Hunches, horse races, and heartbreak
Ten years after Simone Payton broke his heart, all Roscoe Winston wants is a doughnut. He’d also like to forget her entirely, but that’s never going to happen. Roscoe Winston remembers everything—every look, every word, every single unrequited second—and the last thing he needs is another memory of Simone. Unfortunately, after one chance encounter, Simone keeps popping up everywhere he happens to be . . . Ten years after Roscoe Winston dropped out of her life, all Simone Payton wants is to exploit him. She’d also like some answers from her former best friend about why he ghosted her, but if she never gets those answers, that’s a-okay. Simone let go of the past a long time ago. Seriously, she has. She totally, totally has. She is definitely not still thinking about Roscoe. Nope. She’s more than happy to forget he exists. But first, she needs just one teeny-tiny favor . . . Dr. Strange Beard is a full-length romantic comedy novel, can be read as a stand-alone, and is the fifth book in the USA TODAY bestselling Winston Brothers series. ~My Review~
This pains me to say but this may be my least favorite of all Penny Reid's books. I had no problem relating to Sienna Diaz, as her character was pure fun right from the beginning. With Reid writing as Simone Payton, it didn't sound quite right to me. Even in the story, when race factors in and Simone tells Ashley Winston to let the person of color voice their fear, their concerns, and to let them speak up instead of relying on this "white savior" narrative. Or perhaps that's just how I took it, as a person of color with the knowledge and experiences of what marginalized people have to go through on any given day. I love you, Penny, but I truly didn't need to have someone like you, a white woman, tell me a story, nay, a lecture on race issues. It sounded forced, and hollow and I didn't need to be a part of that narrative. I GET that, and even my own experiences as a "token Asian" in a mostly Caucasian small East Texas neighborhood pales in comparison to how I know my black friends are treated daily.
That being said, I tried to finish this book with an open heart, because I REALLY LOVE PENNY REID. In typical Reid style, hilarity, miscommunication and swoon worthy lines from Roscoe ensues. What kept me turning the pages were some of the action sequence and our lovely Winston brood. I just tried to block out some of Simone's internal monologue, and mostly listened and lamented with Roscoe. NOTES: there is a time jump so it was a little confusing in the beginning. Even if I didn't like this book, you still need to get this, as I believe there are a couple little "easter eggs" for Billy's upcoming story! I'm super excited for Billy and absolutely can't wait for his happy ever after! And I believe I shed a tear or two during a conversation with Billy and Roscoe.

There are three things you need to know about Kat Tanner (aka Kathleen Tyson. . . and yes, she is *that* Kathleen Tyson): 1) She’s determined to make good decisions, 2) She must get married ASAP, and 3) She knows how to knit. Being a billionaire heiress isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it sucks. Determined to live a quiet life, Kat Tanner changed her identity years ago and eschewed her family’s legacy. But now, Kat’s silver spoon past has finally caught up with her, and so have her youthful mistakes. To avoid imminent disaster, she must marry immediately; it is essential that the person she chooses have no romantic feelings for her whatsoever and be completely trustworthy. Fortunately, she knows exactly who to ask. Dan O’Malley checks all the boxes: single, romantically indifferent to her, completely trustworthy. Sure, she might have a wee little crush on Dan the Security Man, but with clear rules, expectations, and a legally binding contract, Kat is certain she can make it through this debacle with her sanity—and heart—all in one piece. Except, what happens when Dan O’Malley isn’t as indifferent—or as trustworthy—as she thought? ~My Review~Rating: 5/5In Penny Reid's Newsletter voice: PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE LONGEST REVIEW EVER I feel like I can't just do this review for Dan and Kat, but sum up how I feel about every character in this series. "Every ending does have a beginning," after all is written under the dedication. The whole Knitting in the City series to me, felt like this house party I got invited to and never left. I made a home here, in this giant mansion with these people. Each room is a story layed out and decorated just for them and every character can go in and out, mingle in these snippets or "Easter eggs" found throughout the series. I would find Quinn and Janie in the study of this house party that is hosted in their huge mansion; wall to wall of knowledge at your grasp, the decor a dichotomy of masculinity and femininity. Elizabeth and Nico would be in the living room, perhaps hovering just at the entrance, inviting you into their lives and easing your discomfort at being at a party where you know all know their names, and they know all of you. Marie and Ashley with their goodness, would glide in and out of each room, ensuring that you are served properly, are comfortable and having a ball; the steady lights in a room full of twinkling stars. I'd probably venture into the kitchen where Sandra and Fiona occupy a space. Hearth, laughter, warmth, mother hens in a room where the tears are shed, bellies are fed, and laughter abounds. Throughout the series, I had pictured Kat in a tower of her own construct, and where not even the bravest knights would coax her down. I pictured her in aloofness, waiting for her story and letting the world write it for her. Never in my imagination, would I find that Kat is the embodiment of a dragon, sitting in her tower, yes waiting for her story but also bidding her time. Controlling her narrative, as best as she can. A dragon with a multimillionaire dollar pen. I love the way Penny Reid writes each woman's prerogatives, missteps, hopes and friendships, and messy love lives. She doesn't mince words about their faults or beliefs, and sprinkles conversations that are needed in today's temperament. These women are real to me, because I find pieces of them in my friends as we struggle to have an open dialogue with each other, as we laugh over wine and books, as commiserate about what this world is coming to, and grateful that in our world, we've found each other and because pieces of them are me, in my anxiety, my mental preparations and quirks. In Marriage of Inconvenience, I saw a lot of my worries and worst case scenarios (that I'm working on by the way) in Kat. I applaud. I toast. I salute. I continue to be in awe of how Reid approaches mental illnesses. I thought she did an amazing job covering what living with mental illness is like in Shelly Sullivan and Beau's story in Beard in Mind (Winston Bros #4) but it was just as wonderful to be able to read that in this story. (We are not our illnesses is an epiphany that we need to believe). And there were parts here that came full circle for me. I HATE spoilers, so I'm not going to say but I appreciated this book. I will now reread this entire series and try to hang out at this rocking party a little longer. ***I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I am not required to write a positive one. Love? Second chances? That crap is for romantics, not realists like Juliette. She has a bad attitude about love and an even worse one when it comes to second chances. Devastating news from his sister certainly doesn’t help. At least he has the holidays to look forward to. When Landon shows up at the mall and Juliette prevents a disaster, he can’t stop thinking about that sweet elf. Juliette doesn’t believe in the spirit of Christmas, but she can’t help but wonder why Landon was in her line that day. Could Landon deserve one of those second chances she's so unwilling to give? Newlywed Katie Maxwell is ready to settle down and leave her amateur detective days behind. But when the veil of secrecy surrounding her husband’s latest project takes them to Europe, her penchant for sleuthing lands her in some serious hot foreign water.
Katie will need to think quickly to talk her way out of handcuffs and a Parisian jail cell. Too bad she doesn't speak French. For the Love of Katie is the second madcap adventure in The Katie Chronicles. This book can be read as a standalone, but why would you want to skip the first? ~ My Review ~
Something worth mentioning before I begin: I never read the first book, as I understood this can be read as a standalone. That being said though, and much like the blurb, why did I want to skip the first one, right? I got the feel for the characters and their relationships with each other from the beginning. There were parts that I'm sure I if I had read the first one, I would have been privy to the inside jokes.
However, my clueless self enjoyed the ride as I laughed along with this book!! There were tons of giggles and some cringe worthy moments to be had and I was rooting for Katie's happiness to make sure she doesn't get into any more trouble. The secondary characters were written well and kudus to Erica Lucke Dean for the character development. I felt like that coworker who always tagged along for these after hour drinks and knowing just a little enough about these coworkers for me to both adore and worry about. ***I received this book in exchange for an honest review. After walking away from her career as a business banker to pursue writing full-time, Erica moved from the hustle and bustle of the big city to a small tourist town in the North Georgia Mountains where she lives in a 90-year-old haunted farmhouse with her workaholic husband, her 180lb lap dog, and at least one ghost.
When she's not busy writing or tending to her collection of crazy chickens, diabolical ducks, and a quintet of piglets, hell bent on having her for dinner, she's either reading bad fan fiction or singing karaoke in the local pub. Much like the main character in her first book, To Katie With Love, Erica is a magnet for disaster, and has been known to trip on air while walking across flat surfaces. How she's managed to survive this long is one of life's great mysteries. This was a fun little read! This did have too much sex, definitely not a clean read, for my clean readers. I had to skip a few pages. There is also strong language here. That being said, the bulk of the story was fine and enjoyable - no pun intended. The characters were well written and just when I thought I had them figured out, they surprised me, which was part of why I really liked this book. Can't wait for the second installment.

Carrie is a mum. An author. A creator of worlds. A dreamer. A friend.
At her childhood home in Yorkshire, Carrie was encouraged to utilize her imagination, to see things for what they could be, and to ask the question “what if?” Her mum introduced her to worlds filled with magic: Barrie, Lewis, Tolkien, Blyton. That magic evolved and continued to inspire her when she discovered Rowling and Sanderson. They all asked the question and explored the possibilities, opening doors to new adventures that would forever change generations to come. Even as a child, Carrie preferred creative outlets and writing. But as an adult, Carrie had not yet had that moment of inspiration to begin writing a novel of her own. That all changed one normal morning, on a normal walk to school, when a small boy slipped from the pavement and on to the road. There was no accident. No horror. Just a near miss that later formulated into one question: what if he was able to save himself? Fueled by this question and Carrie’s love of fantasy, European folklore, and mythological creatures, The Riftkeepers emerged. This world answered her question. The series gave birth to characters that took on a life of their own, many telling continued stories in novellas and spinoffs. When Carrie isn’t writing and annoying her editor with endless typos, she barely sleeps, thinks about her characters, indulges in an unhealthy Facebook addiction, exploring the beauty of the Lake District as her backyard, and contemplating which she loves more: pizza or wine. Definitely wine. Considered to be one of the most boring people she knows, writing her own biography was a definite weakness. Her first draft was rubbish and was picked apart by friends who insisted she was funnier and far more interesting than she gives herself credit. She was no longer allowed to write her own biography, so she provided input. Carrie now resides in West Cumbria with her husband and two children. They are her inspiration. Her world.

~ My Review ~
Okay, so the last book I was a bit frustrated about the way it ended. I mean, seriously, nooooo. Luckily for me, I didn't have to wait too long (2 months) before picking up book 2. Much like the first, this was fast paced. I enjoyed switching between the different characters and seeing their point of view and how they fit into this puzzle. We get to be inside some pretty twisted minds but I like knowing their back story and the desperation they feel to push them to the point where they are where they are. Gaia has matured from her experiences and she's going to be one bad a$$ Queen. I loved seeing her growth and you get the sense that she's only going to get stronger for whatever lies ahead.
There were surprises and plenty of action and twists and turns that I started to worry how Jennifer Rayes was going to tie it all up towards the end. Sadly and spoiler alert, there will be a continuation (I hope) to this madness. ***I received this book in exchange for an honest review. However, these thoughts and opinions are my own. I'm not required to write a positive review.***

She kept every rule they ever gave her and for every rule she broke, she felt immense guilt whilst her little sister made it her life's mission to break the rules. "Everyone calls me perfect; the perfect daughter, the perfect student, the perfect friend, practically perfect in every way, I might as well be fricking Mary Poppins. She relishes in the way authors can create worlds with the words they put in their books. She loves the way your imagination introduces you to a new world when you read a book. It may well be a world completely foreign to the one you live in. That world is brought to life; inspires you to dream, captivates your imagination, entices your senses.
Hanleigh first took to reading as a small child reading Dr Zeus. She then fell in love with romance literature when she first read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen; when she first swooned over Mr Darcy. She's read more books than she can count and owns more books than some libraries. Although born in Scotland, she sometimes wishes she could live inside the world that she can create inside her mind, but since that isn't possible she puts pen to paper and shares that world with this world instead. There is something addictive about being able to mould your words into something that causes the reader to fall into your mind. When you put pen to paper and create a world, it's exhilarating. Every word has meaning. You know every character intimately. You know every secret, every whisper, every smell, every look,; as the author you know the world you created and more so than even the most avid of readers you can get lost in your own creation.
