Tobias and Kincade are part of a cryptic organization that’s trying to uncover the secrets behind the Regime. Chapter 9 (Excerpt #5)
* * * Tobias * * *

The television in the commons area of the Op hummed the classical music that announced Channel 1, the station that broadcasted the most information for the Regime.
Evan, Susan, and I rushed in to see what the fuss was about. A few others came in as well. Rafi and Eric were already in there. “Something must have happened. This is an unscheduled broadcast,” Rafi informed us.
On screen, top anchorwoman Wendy Berry wore a fine pin-striped pants suit. Her co-anchorman, Pablo Rodriguez, sat beside her. Wendy jumped right down to business. “Good afternoon, United Origins. We have an important update. I have unfortunate news about the governor’s daughter, Cindy Johansson.”
“Ah, shit,” Rafi exclaimed.
My thoughts exactly.
“Cindy was involved in a robbery on her way home and she was killed,” Wendy continued.
Susan covered her hand over her mouth. “That’s horrible.”
On screen, Pablo shifted his weight, then he balled his fists. Scrunching my nose, I said, “Something feels off about this. The crime rate is low with the cruel punishments for breaking the law. A robbery seems unlikely.”
“I gotta agree,” Eric jumped in. “I don’t think it’s as simple as Cindy being at the wrong place at the wrong time.”
“It’s tragic. Cindy will be missed,” Wendy added. “The person responsible for her death is being apprehended.”
Pablo narrowed his eyes at Wendy. “Why is he looking at her like that?” asked Rafi.
I was wondering the same thing myself.
“This isn’t right,” Pablo murmured.
“Excuse me?” Wendy raised her eyebrow.
Pablo turned to her. “We’re supposed to report the facts.”
Wendy’s eyes dilated. “We are.”
“No, you’re twisting the facts.”
“I beg your pardon?” Wendy sneered.
“What the hell’s going on?” Rafi chimed in. “Pablo is calling her out—his own co-anchor!”
“Pipe down, Rafi, so we can hear,” Eric told him.
“Pablo, I’m not sure what you’re referring to.” Wendy stood firm. “This is the information that we’ve been given.”
That’s when Pablo got bold. I respected him, though. “We both know Cindy wasn’t murdered in a robbery. She was devastated that she didn’t get accepted onto the Temptation Trials show, her only chance to fight for love. Cindy was depressed about her arranged marriage, so she committed suicide.”
A low humming grew very loud, and what happened within the next few seconds was hard to make out. Pablo’s head smacked against the table in front of him, and then he flew backward, disappearing from the set. The humming sound was blaring now, and the station went black.

Our gang was silent for a moment, dazed by what had just gone down, and then Rafi yelled, “Holy shit! Did you guys see that?”
“It was so fast, I’m not sure what I saw,” Evan said.
“This is awful,” Susan added, placing her palm against her forehead.
“It seems Pablo wanted to be truthful and got yanked off the set for doing so,” I sighed. “Let’s pull up a replay of it to find out more.”
“That’s a good idea,” my Uncle Marcus agreed, just coming into the commons area.
My crew and I rushed into the IT room to review the footage. With our high-tech equipment we could slow down and enhance in great detail what happened in the blur of seconds. I prompted in the instructions on the computer. Everyone waited in anticipation for it to load.
“All right, let’s see exactly what occurred.” I hit play.
In slow motion, an enforcer ran in and slammed Pablo’s head against the podium. He had no time to recover before the official yanked him backward by his hair, off the set.
Evan whistled, and Rafi exclaimed, “I can’t fucking believe this!”
“This is bad.” I put my two cents in.
“How can the Regime cover this up?” asked Susan.
“I’m sure they’ll find a way,” Marcus replied. “I’m going to reach out to the other branches to see what I can find out. They will probably want me to put a team together to investigate further. I’ll keep you guys posted.” Marcus spun on his heels.
“Evan, pull up station 1 on a monitor in here. I’m going to probe this footage more—see if anything else comes up,” I told him.
The gang tossed back and forth about the outcome. Going over the footage in more detail, I didn’t come across anything else new—except that I guaranteed Pablo had a broken nose with the force of the blow he’d taken.
“Do you guys understand that Cindy committed suicide because she was going to be forced to marry someone that she didn’t love?” Susan asked.
“It’s very sad,” I replied. “Even worse, they are trying to pretend that Cindy was robbed and murdered—all so society doesn’t question how fucked up their arranged marriage system is.”
“Someone with her prestige killing herself over the matter would cause massive riots,” Alice chimed in. “It would read as: ‘people are so unhappy about the Regime’s marriage law that it’s driving them to take their own lives.’”
“Yeah, her being the governor’s daughter would stir a ruckus, so they’re desperate to cover it up,” Evan added.
“They’ll do anything to prove that their world order works best.” Rafi’s brow knitted. “I will bet money that Wendy will return and just pretend like nothing happened.”
“I’ll bet you fifty bucks that she makes up a crazy excuse for Pablo,” Evan countered.
“You’re on,” Rafi said. “What’s your wager, Tim?”
“Twenty on her acting like nothing happened.”
“What about you, Susan?” Rafi smiled at her.
“I am too upset about this craziness to joke about it.”
“I’m not thrilled, either,” Rafi replied. “I’m just trying to lighten the mood. What about you, Tobias?”
“I’m not betting, either. The chick just offed herself. But I think Wendy will make up a cover story—not just act like Pablo was never there.”
Other members in the room put their wagers in or just voiced their opinions as Channel 1 buzzed back to life.

Wendy showed her pretty face on screen. “Good afternoon, United Origins. Sorry for the brief interruption. Mr. Pablo Rodriguez seems to have suffered a stroke. He’s getting medical attention.”
“Really?” Rafi commented. “They expect us to buy into that?”
“Due to his unfortunate condition, Pablo was confused, babbling nonsense regarding Cindy Johansson. She was indeed a victim of robbery and her attacker will be prosecuted.”
“This is a crock of shit,” I added. “They’re trying to play us for fools, giving us a bullshit excuse. Just as I knew they would.”
Wendy flipped her hair over her shoulder. “Governor Johansson will be speaking on the matter soon. Our condolences and prayers go out to their family.”
Wendy wore a phoney-sympathetic expression as Channel 1’s theme music came on, signaling the program was going off the air.

This book can be read before or after Temptation Trials Part I. Find out the guy’s POV in a new story that unravels through the Trials.

The Nameless Soldier

Chapter One
Tarvic woke to the sound of a distant yell, abruptly silenced. He pushed his blankets aside and sat up, puzzled, but heard only the light patter of rain on the canvas. “What was that?”
Drevel, his roommate in the barracks and tentmate out on campaigns like this, stirred and rolled over. “What?”
“I heard something. Someone shouting.”
“It’s probably just another drill.” But Drevel sat up too, shoving his own blankets away, as Tarvic crawled over and untied the tent flap.
A blast of wintry air and raindrops greeted him as he leaned out, peering across the tent-studded hillside. Clouds hid the moon and stars, and on every side the thick dark of the forest leaned in from the edges of the large clearing. But the telltale flickering light of distant torches sent shadows leaping over tents and across the open spaces between them. Why would someone be using torches out here? Any soldier in camp had easy access to lanterns among the supplies.
Something was wrong. Very wrong. Tarvic pulled back into the tent and yanked on his breeches and jacket.
They both heard the next yell, closer this time, and then the unmistakable clash of swords. Both men snatched up their own swords, jamming their feet into their boots and fumbling for shields. From all around them, shouts of alarm erupted as men in their company woke up.
And then the enemy was upon them. Horses exploded through the camp, trampling tents and the soldiers just crawling out of them. Riders leaned low off their mounts’ backs, swinging swords and waving torches.
Halfway out of his tent, Tarvic threw himself flat on his face to avoid a slash that would probably have decapitated him. He scrambled to his feet, only to be knocked off them again by a blow that he barely caught on his shield.
Light, shadows, horses, blades, rain. Chaos raged through the clearing to the sound of crashing metal, pounding hooves, shouts of challenge and desperation. Tarvic regained his feet and fought as best he could from the ground while enemy riders thundered around him. Dodging and ducking, he aimed for the men’s legs and tried to keep out from under their horses’ hooves. With no idea who he was fighting or why, his only goal to stay alive for the next heartbeat, he dodged and darted through the tumult looking for spots where horses and enemy swords weren’t. All around him, men fought and ran and crumpled to lie as limply as the trampled tents.
Slipping and stumbling in the mud, Tarvic felt a surge of satisfaction as his sword met flesh and an enemy yelled in pain. And then the man wheeled his horse and charged back toward him, and Tarvic turned to flee.
He tripped on something soft that groaned. Pain shot through Tarvic’s wrist as he caught his fall, and only a quick roll saved him from being trampled as the man’s horse cantered over him.
Its rider wheeled again, and Tarvic rose to his knees, barely raising his shield in time to protect his face. The force of the blow threw him backward, jarring his already sore wrist.
Another horse leaped over him, and Tarvic cried out in pain as a hoof struck him on the shoulder. He stumbled to his feet, ducking low to present as small a target as possible, and ran through the melee.
He saw fewer people on foot now, more obstacles in the mud. Was it cowardly to flee from a battle you couldn’t win? Nothing in Tarvic’s eight months in the military had prepared him for this. Not counting occasional minor border skirmishes, the kingdom of Alasia hadn’t seen an actual war in six generations. Besides routine patrols, city peacekeeping, and the frequent drills and training, the military’s primary duties involved escorting merchant wagons through robber-frequented stretches of rural highway and keeping an eye on the sections of coastline where seafaring raiders were known to attack. Tarvic had never fought in a battle that involved more than a handful of opponents at a time, and none of those opponents had been anywhere near this organized — or this deadly.
If we escape, we can regroup somewhere safer and — A hard blow to the back knocked him to the ground again as another horse pounded over him. Giving up all pretense of courage, Tarvic scrambled to his feet once more and fled for the edge of the clearing and the relative safety of the trees beyond. I can’t do anything here. They’re going to slaughter us all!
He was practically there when another rider appeared in front of him, leaning low with sword outstretched. Tarvic almost impaled himself on the blade, raising his shield just in time. He fought back frantically as the man slashed, swinging his weapon again and again. I need my horse! Military training had included nothing about how to fight a mounted enemy from the ground. But Lightning was tethered in the row of makeshift stalls on the far side of the camp, probably prancing restlessly under his blanket and wondering why his rider didn’t come to spur him into battle.
Tarvic didn’t even see the blow that almost killed him. His ears barely registered the thudding of more galloping hooves from behind, nearly drowned out by the rain and the sounds of battle. But the world exploded in light and pain as something struck the back of his head harder than anything had ever hit him before.
He lurched forward, feeling his sword drop from limp fingers. Managing two steps before his legs buckled, he was just conscious enough to recognize the urgent need to crawl. Don’t stop. Don’t stop. Don’t stop. Or they’ll kill you out here. That was the only thought left in his mind as he pulled himself toward the concealing shadows behind the line of tree trunks. And then even that faded, giving way to darkness.

Something is brewing. Like the far off rumble of a train in the distance, a rebellion is stirring. A cry for change arises in the midst of a traditional monarchy, where King Addison has inherited the throne. Who are the underground troublemakers? What is stirring their defiant banner and demand for change?
Find out in The Rebellion! (The Tales of Tarsurella #2)

Vanessa Bennett lands her dream job working at the Palace in Tarsurella. She struggles to balance everything on her plate: life in a new country, stressful deadlines, crabby co-workers, college classes at the local University, and blossoming feelings of romantic adoration toward her boss–King Addison. Keeping up with her To-Do list, while trying to earn respect in Addison’s male-dominated administration, presents its challenges. Nevertheless, she can’t help but fight a reoccurring thought and the excitement rising with it: is Addison interested in her?
Addison is adjusting to his new role as King. Rumors of a rebellious uprising among the youth in Tarsurella intensifies, as acts of violence and protest break out across the city. Addison is determined to uncover the hidden instigator who fearlessly blogs democracy-driven ideals with a secretive pen name. Will Addison discover and expose the fiery rebellion leader? Or will his efforts fail to stop the rebellious thoughts spreading like wildfire, causing a heartbreaking rift in his divided nation?

Synopsis
When Reggae recording artist and poet made the journey from her native Jamaica to New York City to do some recording, she decided to pursue a higher education. She had recently become a Christian, and her newfound relationship with God was quickly put to the test as she entered the York College of the City University of New York (CUNY) on a financial shoestring. Each semester ended with her owing the university money. The controller was always quite adamant that until her debt was paid, she couldn’t register for the upcoming semester. She would plead her case, even promising that “My Father is going to give me the money again to pay.”

Indeed, the Father of us all did come through every time, using various people as the conduit through which His riches flowed so that just in time, her school bills were caught up and she was allowed to register for the next semester. Each time the money came from unexpected places and sometimes from complete strangers. Each time the Lord provided for her needs she tried not to worry, but human nature what it is, she would find herself fretting over where the funds would come from. But …

“The journey through college allowed me to get closer to God, prove Him over and over and witness first-hand how He cares for each and every one of us. It allowed me to challenge God and watch Him come through for me.”

Marriage of Inconvenience, an all new romantic comedy standalone in the USA Today bestselling, Knitting in the City Series by Penny Reid, is LIVE!

There are three things you need to know about Kat Tanner (aka Kathleen Tyson. . . and yes, she is *that* Kathleen Tyson): 1) She’s determined to make good decisions, 2) She must get married ASAP, and 3) She knows how to knit.

Being a billionaire heiress isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. In fact, it sucks. Determined to live a quiet life, Kat Tanner changed her identity years ago and eschewed her family’s legacy. But now, Kat’s silver spoon past has finally caught up with her, and so have her youthful mistakes. To avoid imminent disaster, she must marry immediately; it is essential that the person she chooses have no romantic feelings for her whatsoever and be completely trustworthy.

Fortunately, she knows exactly who to ask. Dan O’Malley checks all the boxes: single, romantically indifferent to her, completely trustworthy. Sure, she might have a wee little crush on Dan the Security Man, but with clear rules, expectations, and a legally binding contract, Kat is certain she can make it through this debacle with her sanity—and heart—all in one piece.

Except, what happens when Dan O’Malley isn’t as indifferent—or as trustworthy—as she thought?

~My Review~

Rating: 5/5

In Penny Reid's Newsletter voice:
PREPARE YOURSELF FOR THE LONGEST REVIEW EVER

I feel like I can't just do this review for Dan and Kat, but sum up how I feel about every character in this series. "Every ending does have a beginning," after all is written under the dedication.
The whole Knitting in the City series to me, felt like this house party I got invited to and never left. I made a home here, in this giant mansion with these people. Each room is a story layed out and decorated just for them and every character can go in and out, mingle in these snippets or "Easter eggs" found throughout the series. I would find Quinn and Janie in the study of this house party that is hosted in their huge mansion; wall to wall of knowledge at your grasp, the decor a dichotomy of masculinity and femininity. Elizabeth and Nico would be in the living room, perhaps hovering just at the entrance, inviting you into their lives and easing your discomfort at being at a party where you know all know their names, and they know all of you. Marie and Ashley with their goodness, would glide in and out of each room, ensuring that you are served properly, are comfortable and having a ball; the steady lights in a room full of twinkling stars. I'd probably venture into the kitchen where Sandra and Fiona occupy a space. Hearth, laughter, warmth, mother hens in a room where the tears are shed, bellies are fed, and laughter abounds.
Throughout the series, I had pictured Kat in a tower of her own construct, and where not even the bravest knights would coax her down. I pictured her in aloofness, waiting for her story and letting the world write it for her. Never in my imagination, would I find that Kat is the embodiment of a dragon, sitting in her tower, yes waiting for her story but also bidding her time. Controlling her narrative, as best as she can. A dragon with a multimillionaire dollar pen.
I love the way Penny Reid writes each woman's prerogatives, missteps, hopes and friendships, and messy love lives. She doesn't mince words about their faults or beliefs, and sprinkles conversations that are needed in today's temperament. These women are real to me, because I find pieces of them in my friends as we struggle to have an open dialogue with each other, as we laugh over wine and books, as commiserate about what this world is coming to, and grateful that in our world, we've found each other and because pieces of them are me, in my anxiety, my mental preparations and quirks.
In Marriage of Inconvenience, I saw a lot of my worries and worst case scenarios (that I'm working on by the way) in Kat. I applaud. I toast. I salute. I continue to be in awe of how Reid approaches mental illnesses. I thought she did an amazing job covering what living with mental illness is like in Shelly Sullivan and Beau's story in Beard in Mind (Winston Bros #4) but it was just as wonderful to be able to read that in this story. (We are not our illnesses is an epiphany that we need to believe).
And there were parts here that came full circle for me. I HATE spoilers, so I'm not going to say but I appreciated this book.
I will now reread this entire series and try to hang out at this rocking party a little longer.

***I received this book in exchange for an honest review. I am not required to write a positive one. These thoughts and opinions are my own.***

By Tracy Krimmer

Blurb:
Love? Second chances? That crap is for romantics, not realists like Juliette. She has a bad attitude about love and an even worse one when it comes to second chances. And she may dress like an elf for a few weeks out of the year, but that doesn’t mean she loves Christmas.

Stability? Purpose? Landon is surfing a pleasant wave of both until he's fired. Devastating news from his sister certainly doesn’t help. At least he has the holidays to look forward to.

When Landon shows up at the mall and Juliette prevents a disaster, he can’t stop thinking about that sweet elf. Juliette doesn’t believe in the spirit of Christmas, but she can’t help but wonder why Landon was in her line that day. Could Landon deserve one of those second chances she's so unwilling to give?
